I'm a freelance journalist and travel writer, but after my 18 year old son left home to start his gap year in late 2010, I sobbed my heart out, and then started thinking about how this means I can indulge my own passion for travel even more.
After all, what's a mummy bird to do when her only chick has left the nest? Fly herself, of course!
So I started Travelling Wren - a blog to write about my own travel adventures as I forget about empty nest syndrome, and to hopefully inspire other women (and men - in fact, any redundant parent!) to do the same.
Many of the things I write about applies to everyone anyhow - you can take from it what you will - but I do enjoy giving the site a female perspective on things!
This site is a personal venture, but as mentioned, I'm also a travel journalist. Past and present I have written for national media clients such as the Guardian, The Independent, The Times, Wanderlust, Daily Express, The Daily Mirror, Zest, easyJet Traveller, JetAway and many more. I write for TheTravelEditor.com too (and see www.andreawren.co.uk).
I used to run my own online travel agency business (Wren Elite Travel) as well, which especially helped single women to find holidays. So I'm somewhat familiar with how the whole travel industry operates. However, I found running a travel agency too stressful (I much prefer to be travelling and writing about it) and jacked it in. I learned a lot in the couple of years I was doing it, though.
Though I do write about travel, there is always more I want to share. And there are often little snippets of info I think could help other travellers but I have nowhere to put them - hence another reason I set up this site.
There is a big gap online for women travellers who may have family responsibilities still or who may now be free of those. Not everyone who wants to take off around the world is a spritely pre-parental twenty-something or a student. Some of them are like me - feisty and adventurous, but no longer under thirty (though admittedly, I could get away with 28, haha).
So - Travelling Wren is a place for me to write about my biggest passion, and a place for women travellers to come to, and especially women travellers who may be in the same position as me - with kids who have left home and who are now free to take off as they please.
